Search Strategies, Advanced Googling and Evaluation Tools for Websites
As our students grow in the areas of research and citation, it is more important than ever that we as educators also grow in our understanding in this area. As we have learned, websites, apps and even search engines can come and go at a surprisingly fast rate (check out internet live stats if you like a little trivia, and also this article by Alan November; The advanced google searches every student must know). To support us in our understanding of available resources for students and how to determine credibility of websites check out these resource.
We will start our tour by exploring these links about specific search strategies and features: Google Advanced search, Google Scholar, How to Search by Reading Level, Google Search operators and even Basic Search Education Lesson Plans. Many of these links and more are provided by our technology integration specialist from the MISD and can be found by going to their Everything Google site.
These resources will help us better understand criteria for website evaluation: Four Criteria for Web Evaluation (elementary), and 7 Criteria for Web Evaluation Secondary (Advanced). These resources and extended learning can be found on the Look up who owns a domain (website), 21 Things 4 Teachers Search Strategies module, form the REMC Association of Michigan.
Lastly these additional resources can help guide us into a better understanding of resources available to our students for searching and also citing resources, which goes hand in hand with using resources from the internet and also to our own research practice as educators.
Student Resources: APA Style Blog: How to create a reference for a YouTube video, Creative Commons search, How to Use MEL tutorial, Project Gutenburg.
Teacher Resources:Power Searching with Google, WolframAlpha (computational knowledge engine), APA Style Blog, How to Easily Cite Resources Papers in Different Format Using Google Docs from Educational Technology and Mobile Learning, instaGrok, 6 Best Search Engines for Academic Research via Teachercast.

Many of us often feel overwhelmed by either the feeling of not having enough resources, or having to many resources. So her are a few reliable and reviewed sites.
